Opening of Windrush Square

Brixton is my town and I am proud to be the host of the opening on Saturday 27 February from 1pm. The square has been a long time coming and commemorates the arrival of the Empire Windrush from Jamaica on 22 June 1948. The ship docked at Tilbury from the Caribbean carrying 492 immigrants and, for many, symbolises the beginnings of modern British multicultural society. On the day there will be live music performances, dance demonstrations and family art workshops. There will also be stalls by Spacemakers, Brixton Village and the Brixton Pound. The event will conclude with a lantern-lit procession led by local school children and a magnificent Phoenix....All we need now is Caribbean weather!!
